Wild Taiga.

I am very excited to announce this workshop, leading a group of up to 6 participants to the true north of Taiga’s untouched lands close to the Russian border.

On the northeastern side of Finland, a wonderful area of pure wilderness where the numbers of European brown bears are thriving. This particular area is a fantastic base to photograph these majestic animals in their natural habitats.

With this workshop being held in July you will have the best opportunity in making the most of the long daylight hours during this month.

As the mist clears over the lake, feel your heart pump as you witness your first sighting of the European brown bear.

The details.

Being hidden amongst the wilderness of the forests and hearing the howls of the wolves is an experience like no other.

During this workshop, we will explore a variety of different hides that are fully catered for photographers, each one giving you the chance to capture photos worthy of being on your wall at home.

Species on this trip: European brown bear, wolverines, wolves, and eagles.

Experience needed?

All levels of photographers are welcome on this workshop ranging from beginners to more seasoned pro’s looking to take their photography up a notch.

I will be available throughout our 5-day adventure and I will ensure you get the best out of your time in Finland. With having access to three different areas which include the forest area, the swamp and the lake you are in for a real treat.

The variety of hides will give you a different perspective in each and you may even be awarded views of the beautiful cubs climbing high up in the trees.

I would recommend to bring along a 500mm prime lens as a priority, however, if you have a 300mm lens with converters this will also suffice. Bringing along a small zoom lens such as the 70-200mm would also be a good option in capturing more environmental images of the bears.

You will not need to bring along your tripod as the hides are equipped with planks which have ball heads attached. Or if you wish you can bring along a camera lens bean bag for support. Bringing along spare sd cards would also be advisable

Whilst we will be photographing the bears all the way through the night inside the hides, it is noted that you bring enough spare batteries to last you through the duration. The provided accommodation where we will sleep during the day will give you the opportunity to re-charge your batteries (no pun intended) for the following afternoon.

Our accommodation will be based at the lodges when we first arrive. All rooms are clean, warm and designed so you can get some sleep during the day ready for the next session.

Additional Information

Due to the workshop taking place in July, the photographic hides will be very warm, possibly up to 40 degrees so please bear this in mind, (again no pun intended).

As we will be spending all night in the hides please be aware that although the later afternoons may be very warm inside the hides, the temperature may drop through the evening so bring appropriate clothing as well as mosquito spray due to it being midge season.

As the setting sun dips below the horizon, this is an oppourtunity to capture some lovely backlit images.

Day 1

Flight to Kajaani airport in Finland where we will meet our hosts and then be transferred to Kuhmo which will take around 1 hour 30 minutes. Kuhmo will be where we will spend the full duration on this workshop. That same afternoon we will head out to the bear hides for our first night of photography.

Day 2-3-4

After the first evening spent inside the hides, we will head back to the accommodation that morning to catch up on some sleep. We will then have dinner and again head out to the hides for the night. Day 3 and 4 will follow the same routine, however, being in different hides for a variety of photographic opportunities.

Day 5

Leaving our last hide in the morning we will head back for our breakfast and the chance to freshen up, followed by our transfer back to Kajaani airport where we will return back home.

Unspoiled woodlands provide a beautiful backdrop for an experience of a lifetime.
