Meet the clowns of the sea.

Join me on what will be a wonderful 3-night workshop photographing the enigmatic clowns of the sea on Skomer island.

As overnight guests, we will have the island almost to ourselves after the day trippers have left, which stretches as far as 750 acres. This will also offer some great opportunities to capture some amazing images of the puffin colonies during sunset.

Located not far from the Pembrokeshire coast, just shy of three miles from Martin’s Haven, you will have an experience like no other. Here you will find a variety of seabirds that grace this land ranging from razorbills, owls, guillemots and of course the puffins.

During your 3-night stay, you will have fantastic access to explore the island if you wish and will also receive my professional guidance and tuition throughout your stay.

Develop your camera skills and learn all about capturing puffins in flight.

The details.

Experience needed?

All levels of photographers are welcome on this workshop ranging from beginners to more seasoned pro’s looking to take their photography up a notch.

I will be available throughout our 3-night stay on the island and I will ensure you get the best out of your time on Skomer. With having access to the island at the evening those that want to stay out after dark are welcome to do so with me and participate in some astrophotography if we have clear skies forecast, photographing the milky way in all its glory, if you have never seen the dark skies you will be in for a real treat.

Skomer Island is a very unique and diverse place, you will be very surprised how close you can get to the puffins here and so to photograph these lovely birds you can get some great images with anything from a wide angle lens such as 16mm to the use of a 600mm super telephoto lens. As a recommendation, if you can only bring one lens then I would bring along a 300mm focal length.

Everything on the island is run solely through solar power so you will need to make sure you bring enough spare camera batteries and a small power bank such as the Anker PowerCoe 20100 to charge other items such as your mobile phone if needed.

Fitness Level

Although relatively flat for the most part, upon arriving from the boat there are roughly 70 to 80 steep steps leading up onto the main Island so I recommend to only bring what you need for the duration of your stay.

Our sleeping quarters will be based within a converted farmhouse on the center of the island which is easily accessible and fully equipped. Within the farmhouse are kitchen facilities, mixed style dormitory rooms, and solar power. Gas hob, guest fridge, cooking utensils, hot and cold running water, pillows and duvets are all included in your stay.  * You will, however, need to bring linen or a sleeping bag as linen is not provided.

Enjoy the fresh sea breeze as the sun sets below the horizon.

I like to base my workshops in and around June due to having the best opportunity to get those intimate classic puffin portraits of their catch of sand eels. These images are the ones you will be proud to have hung up on your wall at home.

Day 1

We will meet at the farm car park at 8 am where we will be given assistance with our bags, making our way down to landing point at Martin’s Haven. During this time we will discuss the day, ensuring everyone is set up and ready. At 9 am we will depart on the boat making our way across to Skomer, which is roughly a 15-minute sail.

make sure to keep your eyes open for seals and dolphins during the boat ride across. Upon arriving on the Island there will be a short brief from the wardens and then we will make our way up onto the Island, unpacking all belongings at the farmhouse first.

After everyone is settled and ready to explore, we will make our way around the island, getting to no various locations on Skomer and learning all about the best areas to photograph specific birds. I will be at hand at all times during this time to discuss any requirements and what expectations you have photographically during your stay. Afterwards, we will head back to the farmhouse for dinner before heading out to spend all of our time photographing the puffin colonies during sunset!

Day 2

On day 2, we will spend all of our time making the most of sunrise photographing the puffins. Afterwards, you will have unlimited freedom to go and explore the island as you wish and then meet up as a group for dinner. Sunset will give us another glorious opportunity to capture stunning images of the puffins, and those that are night owls can spend the evening with me learning how to take photo’s of the dark skies and capture the milky way over Skomer.

Day 3

Before departing for the mainland at 9 am, those that wish to will have a last chance to photograph the seabirds during sunrise.

Experience the sounds of thousands of seabirds as the sun reflects off the dramatic rock faces of Skomer.
